Church Remodeling

Celebrating 50 Years of Our Church Buildings

Dear St. Leo the Great parishioner:

Thank you for your support of St. Leo the Great parish. Whether you are a long-time parishioner or recently joined our parish family, you will find St. Leo the Great Church is truly an active parish family built upon living our faith every day as disciples of Jesus.

In January, our remodeling project of the church started and for the next several weeks through mid-February we are having Mass in the Event Center. With the help of our remodeling committee, the decision was made to separate the project into three phases. The first phase will be highlighted by new flooring in the body of the church and installation of new pews. The second phase will have new flooring in the sanctuary and the third phase will be new flooring and pews in our chapel.

We have received many, many years of use of our pews and carpets but we could not wait much longer to replace them without incurring a safety risk. Our maintenance staff routinely fixed the fifty year-old kneelers and pews. The 35 year-old carpet in many areas is worn down and frayed and poses a potential tripping hazard.

We are asking for your support of this project. There are a couple of different ways to show your support. All donations will be gratefully accepted to make this project a reality.

  1. To help off-set the costs of each new pew, a minimum donation of $2,000 will result in a memorial plaque which will be placed on a new pew at a location of your choice.
  2. If you would like to make a donation with your credit card or an electronic draft from your bank account, please go to the parish website at
  3. If you would like to make a donation with cash or check, please use the attached envelope and place it in the offertory basket or mail it to the parish office.

I am very excited about the future of our parish as we take another step forward in the legacy of our parish family.

Please know of my prayers for you and your family. I rely on your prayers as well.

Gratefully yours in Christ,

Rev. Msgr. Robert E. Zapfel

Project Financial Statement

After consultation with the lay leadership of the parish, a decision was reached to move forward with the planning of the project to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the construction of the church building. Much needed improvements were delayed because other initiatives were deemed more critical. The maintenance staff regularly makes repairs on kneelers which are continually breaking. In certain areas, the carpet is thoroughly worn because of use over 35 years. Any prudent homeowner reaches a point where repairs are just not cost effective and they decide to remodel.

The project will be done in three phases to ensure the parish will not be financially overextended. The project will be a capital expenditure and financed solely by dedicated donations or savings set aside in reserve.

Project expenditures will not financially impact the daily operations or programs of the parish. The anticipated expenditures of all three phases is approximately $275,000. We are currently working with Scheid Architectural and other companies to secure the best possible value on

Phase 1

In January 2020 we started this project. This phase
will be highlighted by the installation of new
flooring, pews, kneelers and the relocation of the
Baptismal Font near the entrance of the church.
The solid oak pews will have cushioned front and
backs for additional comfort. Additionally, a cross
will be made in the main aisle leading to the
sanctuary. Pews that are not needed will be
removed to create a more open and spacious

Phase 2

Once the first phase is completed and funding
is secured, the next step of the remodeling
project will begin. This phase will consist of
new flooring in the sanctuary area. Additional
handrails will also be installed.

Phase 3

The final phase of the remodeling will have
new flooring and pews installed in the chapel.
We will move from one phase to another as
funding is available.

How You Can Help?

All donations will be gratefully accepted to help make this remodeling project a reality.
There will be a special collection specifically for this project. If you would like to donate with cash or check, please use an envelope and mark on the outside” Remodeling Project”. The envelope can be placed in the offertory basket, or mailed to the parish office.

To help off-set the costs of each new pew, a minimum donation of $2,000 will result in a memorial plaque. This plaque will be placed on a pew of the donors choice in memory of a special person. This is a beautiful way to remember a family member, loved one or friend who had a meaningful impact in your life.

Due to space considerations, engraving will be limited to 3 lines and not to exceed 25 characters per line.
